Born in Liverpool, England, to parents Josiah and Henrietta Parker, James was an only child. He fell in love with art and would often visit the art museum after school. During his teen years, he also discovered another side of himself besides his love for art: a fascination with the sea. After sailing on a Cunard liner following his high school graduation, he decided to pursue a career at sea. He began working for the Leyland Line, serving on ships such as the Canadian, Bohemian, and Californian as a deckhand. At age twenty-three, in 1912, James joined the Royal Navy, where he earned the rank of Petty Officer. That same year, thanks to his experience, he was able to join the White Star Line, where he was appointed Master-at-Arms. He served on ships such as the Adriatic and Oceanic and was aboard the Olympic during the events of April 14th/15th, 1912. The same year, romance bloomed when he met a beautiful woman named Gabriella Cardinale while serving on the Olympic. The two fell madly in love and were married in 1913, moving into a modest house in Southampton.
