Подданный Российской (в н.в. Британской) империи, Семён Семёнович Лобанов, 27 лет отроду, явился на свет 22 ноября 1888-го года в Екатеринодарской губернии, в семье просто крестьянина, что по императоровой воле был освобождён от крепостного права. Мальчик уродился невероятно здоровым и недюжинной силы, однако умом не вышел, отчего и помогал батюшке в поле, работая в качестве хлебопашца и живой тягловой силы в полях.
С ранних лет его приметил местный лекарь, который и взял Сёмку в подручные - сперва тот склянки протирал, потом отвары по рецепту варить научился. Этот самый лекарь и вбил в твердолобо-тугоумную голову парнишки азы грамоты, да не только русской, но и латыни.
По настоянию наставника (и после хороших тумаков от самого Сёмы, которые смогли переубедить отца) Семёна сплавили в Санкт-Петербург на врача. Учился он похабно - папироски стрелял, в потасовках участвовал и помыкал своих менторов, за что не раз бывал бит. Подрабатывал фельдшером на скором экипаже, где и набил руку в деле спасения жизней, гоняя поводья по питерским мостовым.
Когда пришла пора сдавать экзамены, Сёмка, ясное дело, провалился, но так упросил комиссию, заявив, что он «никогда врачом не станет», что те, махнув рукой, все таки дали добро на выдачу бумажки что он училище прошел, но не диплома. Этого хватило, чтобы смыться в Москву, а точнее в одну из земских больниц под крылом столбовой дворянки Анастасии Константиновны Кисигач.
Там-то он попал в лапы к известному врачу Доктору Андрею Быкову, в компанию таких же, как он, недоучек-ординаторов. Сёмка был... способным недо-врачом. Так скажем… первым стоял в очереди на этакие словечки своего начальника, но под грузом ответственности и упорством Быкова потихоньку стал входить во вкус и превращаться в настоящего врача.
Шесть лет он отпахал в больнице, когда грянула война. Сёмка, поддавшись угару патриотизма, записался на фронт санитаром.
В 1914-м году воевал в Восточной Пруссии в 1-й армии Ренненкампфа. Под Мазурскими озёрами, пытаясь спасти своего товарища, был ранен шрапнелью и был эвакуирован в тыл. Участвовал в Лодзинской операции, однако немцы погнали его армию в тыл.
Во время Великого отступления его перекинули на юго-запад, где смог и погеройствовать - тот вытащил из града пуль нескольких своих сослуживцев, чем и заслужил Георгиевский крест, затем во время Карпатской операции смог заработать еще один крест, а после и офицерский чин пришёл вместе с орденом Святой Анны "За храбрость".
В 1916-м году, по программе обмена знаниями, Семёна и ещё нескольких санитаров отрядили в русский отряд при Королевском армейском медицинском корпусе. Его отправили в Британию, а там и вовсе определили на госпитальное судно "Британник".

A subject of the Russian (now British) Empire, Semyon Semyonovich Lobanov, 27 years old, was born on November 22, 1888, in the Yekaterinodar province, in the family of just a peasant, who was freed from serfdom by the emperor's will. The boy was born incredibly healthy and of remarkable strength, but he did not come out with his mind, which is why he helped his father in the field, working as a farmer and a living draft force in the fields.
From an early age, he was noticed by a local doctor, who took Semka as a helper - first he wiped the flasks, then he learned how to cook decoctions according to the recipe. It was this same doctor who hammered the basics of literacy into the boy's hard-headed, slow-witted head, and not only Russian, but also Latin.
At the insistence of his mentor (and after good punches from Sema himself, who were able to convince his father), Semyon was sent to St. Petersburg to get a doctor. He studied obscenely, shot cigarettes, participated in scuffles and pushed his mentors, for which he was beaten more than once. He worked part-time as a paramedic on a fast carriage, where he got his hands on saving lives by driving the reins along the St. Petersburg bridges.
When it was time to take the exams, Semka, of course, failed, but he begged the commission so much, saying that he "would never become a doctor" that they waved their hands and still gave the go-ahead to issue a piece of paper that he had passed the college, but not a diploma. This was enough to escape to Moscow, or rather to one of the zemstvo hospitals under the wing of the stolbovaya noblewoman Anastasia Konstantinovna Kisigach.
It was there that he fell into the clutches of a well-known doctor, Dr. Andrei Bykov, in the company of half-educated residents like him. There was a seed... a capable under-doctor. So let's say... I was the first in line for such words from my boss, but under the burden of responsibility and Bykov's persistence, I slowly began to get a taste and turn into a real doctor.
He had been in the hospital for six years when the war broke out. Semka, succumbing to the frenzy of patriotism, signed up for the front as an orderly.
In 1914, he fought in East Prussia in Rennenkampf's 1st Army. Near the Masurian Lakes, trying to save his comrade, he was wounded by shrapnel and was evacuated to the rear. He participated in the Lodz operation, but the Germans drove his army to the rear.
During the "Great Retreat," he was transferred to the southwest, where he was able to fight - he pulled several of his colleagues out of a hail of bullets, which earned him the St. George Cross, then during the Carpathian operation he was able to earn another cross, and after that he received an officer's rank along with the Order of St. Anna "For Bravery".
In 1916, according to the knowledge exchange program, Semyon and several other orderlies were assigned to the Russian squad at the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was sent to Britain, and there he was assigned to the hospital ship "Britannic".
