Very little is publicly known about Black Jack’s background and early career in the medical profession. As a child growing up in Colonial New Zealand, he was critically injured by an unexploded shell from the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s; the shell killed his mother and severely burned his body. He was only saved by the great skill of one of Britain’s best surgeons, and skin grafts from a Maori friend (which resulted in sections of his skin and half of his face being darker).
At the age of 29, Black Jack set up a medical practice based out of his home, treating everyone from politicians and nobility, to workers and the poor. His incredible skill and unconventional methods are closely followed by his reputation for charging exorbitant fees on the order of hundreds or thousands of pounds; although many say that he would cure patients for free if their circumstances move him sufficiently, or if the treatment was (rarely) unsuccessful. Others say that he often attaches unquantifiable conditions to his services; most famously, when he blackmailed and disgraced a politician who violated his order to never approach a woman the politician had harmed. He specializes in limb reattachment and skin reconstruction.
Despite the fees, he lives by modest means, donating most of his earnings to charity, supporting other medical practitioners, and the purchase of natural land for preservation. He refuses to be licensed by the General Council of Medical Education and Registration of the United Kingdom, much to the suspicion and ire of doctors on the List of Registered Medical Practitioners; the lack of licensure often causes problems for his legitimacy in the British Empire, although he usually circumvents it by practicing overseas in secret.
As for his reasons for joining the RAMC as a Medical Officer, all that is certain is that it is hidden somewhere in his completely intractable personal moral code. He was just transferred aboard the HMHS Britannic for this voyage, after his previous posting (Wrest Park Hospital) caught fire in September 1916 and closed for good.
